Why I participate in efforts like iScoop

This quote from PULL by John Seely Brown et al sums it up nicely.
The new institutional model will involve a complete refocusing: Rather than molding individuals to fit the needs of the institution, institutions will be shaped to provide platforms to help individuals achieve their full potential by connecting with others and better addressing challenging performance needs.

Getting Back Into Developing iScoop

I haven't had much time for iScoop this school year, but I hope to get back to work developing the concept over the next few months. The concept being for iScoop to evolve into a resource that independent school educators and students can turn to when they have questions about online and blended learning.

Last Fall I took my first online course. It was an 8 week course on sustainability given by the Boston Architectural College. I really enjoyed the experience, learned a…

Saturday Changes

Happy Saturday,

It seems Saturday morning is when I'm finding the time to do updates to the iScoop site.

A number of iScoop developments to report. I did a bit of work on the site this morning and think it is looking better. As always, feedback and suggestions are great.

I've created two course groups. One for courses that are currently being offered, and one for courses in development.

iScoop seems to be evolving into a place to brainstorm/develop… Continue

Changed "Groups" to "Courses" in the Language Editor

Following a suggestion made by Demetri Orlando I modifed the ning template for iScoop so that instead of Groups we have Courses. It only took about 10 minutes. So create a course and start putting information about your proposed online course within it.

Created twitter account for iScoop today

Unfortunately, 'iscoop' was already taken, so I chose 'iscooperative'. I'm going to try adding a few tweets a day related to developing courses for iScoop.

Fred,

I won't actually be teaching the two courses, I have an AP comp Sci teacher and, separately, an art teacher that are putting together the courses.

I am not interested at this time in teaching a purely online course. Instead I am looking to offer a blended learning environment for my students. I hope to offer professional development opportunities for faculty online in near future.

Fred, Thanks for creating this site. I will post a picture soon. The course we are currently teaching is AP Calculus AB. I have also asked the teacher of the course to sign on to this group. We are having good luck teaching it this year on a bare bones budget and it seems to be working well for our student in Belgium as well as the students at our school. Keep up the great work.

Thanks, Fred! What I'm interested in at the moment is how to use the advantages of the web for course activities and inventions, as well as delivery of the writing/media texts themselves. Have you read about the new Netbooks that promise "cheap" and portable web access & writing applications? "Notebook to Netbook": I'm thinking along those lines for the frame of course.

Hi Fred.

There is the Canadian Association of Independent Schools and several regional organizations such as the Conference of Independent Schools (Ontario) . My colleague Emma Roche, my school's community service director passed on a message about iScoop. She learned about it in a message from Paul Miller at NAIS. Emma is our point person at RSGC for a new consortium of Ontario independent schools offering online courses to their students.

Fred,
I believe you have communicated with Joe Flowers who is the Technology Director at Vanguard. He has helped me develop my AP Calculus AB course for distance learning as well as helping me develop support materials for my other classes.
